1. The indication, occlusal design and handling will be discussed for
– relaxation splint;
– stabilization splint;
– reposition splint;
– decompression splint;
– verticalization splint.
2. Given the indication is correct occlusal splints can be mighty tools in the pre-treatment of craniomandibular disorders.
3. The primary advantage of the occlusal splint over other types of occlusal treatment is that the occlusion can be altered without making it necessary to then irreversiblymodify the patient`s dentition.
4.This lecture will not only focus on the preconditions for a successful therapy using different types of occlusal splints, but will also discuss the limitations and problems of this kind of occlusion-related treatment.

Especialista em prótese, distúrbios craniomandibulares (CMD) e dor orofacial com mais de 45 anos de experiência combinada clínica, acadêmica e de pesquisa.
Experiência clínica extensa em diagnóstico diferencial de dor de cabeça, facial e de pescoço de origem dental, tratamento conservador de CMD e disfunções relacionadas à oclusão, e reabilitação protética complexa de dentições funcionalmente e periodontalmente comprometidas. Ex-diretor do Department of Prosthodontics no Center for Dental Medicine na Marburg University, onde estabeleceu protocolos de tratamento abrangentes para pacientes CMD e prótese geriátrica.
Visiting Assistant Professor e Visiting Professor na TMJ and Orofacial Pain Clinic na University of California San Francisco (1990, 1991, 1993, 1995, 1996) trabalhando com Professor Charles McNeill. Palestrante internacional apresentando extensivamente na Alemanha e Europa sobre diagnóstico e terapia CMD, conceitos de oclusão, prótese sobre implantes e planejamento de tratamento para casos complexos. Co-editor da revista dental "Teamwork" e membro de juntas editoriais para múltiplas publicações dentais alemãs incluindo ZWR e Dental Dialogue. Membro da Academy for Practice and Science da German Society for Dentistry (DGZMK) desde 1990.
DMD pela University of Göttingen, Alemanha (1986). Treinado como técnico dental (1977-1980). PhD (Dr. med. dent.) com dissertação sobre axiografia paraoclusal em análise funcional (1987, University of Göttingen). Habilitação em diagnóstico e terapia CMD (1994, University of Göttingen). Premiado com Kemptner Promotion Prize do Working Group for Functional Diagnostics da German Society for Dentistry (DGZMK, 1987). Nomeado "Qualified Specialist for Prosthodontics" pela German Society for Prosthetic Dentistry and Dental Materials (DGZPW, 1997).
