Especialista em dor orofacial e Reitor da Faculdade de Odontologia da Universidade de Kentucky. Fundador e diretor do Centro de Dor Orofacial na Universidade de Kentucky (estabelecido em 1977), reconhecido como pioneiro na educação sobre DTM e dor orofacial.
Mais de 50 anos de experiência acadêmica e clínica em distúrbios temporomandibulares e manejo da dor orofacial. Desenvolveu o primeiro programa de Mestrado em Ciências em Dor Orofacial nos Estados Unidos, credenciado pela Academia Americana de Dor Orofacial. O Programa de Residência em Dor Orofacial foi um dos primeiros credenciados pela Comissão de Credenciamento Odontológico, formando 65 residentes em tempo integral de 26 países.
Professor e chefe da Divisão de Dor Orofacial, membro do corpo docente em tempo integral na Universidade de Kentucky por 45 anos. Palestrante internacional tendo ministrado mais de 1.300 palestras convidadas em todos os estados dos EUA e 59 países estrangeiros. Director do LSU Orofacial Pain Continuum, um programa abrangente de educação continuada de pós-graduação em dor orofacial para clínicos em atividade. Anteriormente foi Assistant Professor e Director da Oral Medicine/Orofacial Pain Clinic, University of Illinois at Chicago, College of Dentistry (2005–2011). Antes da carreira acadêmica: 22 anos de prática odontológica geral em saúde pública e em consultório particular (1980–2002).
Autor e coautor de mais de 80 publicações revisadas por pares sobre dor orofacial, desordens temporomandibulares, síndrome da ardência bucal e cefaleia. Autor de mais de 25 capítulos de livros em importantes textos de odontologia e medicina da dor. Colaborador do Merck/MSD Manual (Professional Edition) na área de dor orofacial. Coeditor de três textos de referência: Orofacial Pain: Guidelines for Assessment, Diagnosis, and Management (AAOP, 7th edition, Quintessence, 2023); Manual of Temporomandibular Disorders (Wiley-Blackwell); e Temporomandibular Disorders: A Translational Approach from Basic Science to Clinical Applicability. Dr. Lawrence Gottesman is a nationally recognized lecturer and author. He has presented many times at prestigious dental meetings and local dental study groups. Some of the more notable engagements are listed below:
– Greater New York Dental Meeting (2010, 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2015).
– Arnett Orthognathic Surgery Forum (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2017).
– University of Florida Facial Pain Center.
Dr. Gottesman received his dental education at New York University College of Dentistry, graduating in 1977 and maintains a private practice in Rockville Centre, NY. Dr. Gottesman has served on the teaching faculty of the Lenox Hill Hospital Dental Service and has also been on the faculty of the New York University College of Dentistry TMD/Orofacial Pain program where he held the coveted appointment as Director of Neuropathic Pain in the Advanced Orofacial Pain/TMD Graduate teaching program.
Together with Dr. G. William Arnett and Dr. Stephen B. Milam, Dr. Gottesman has co-authored the acclaimed two-part article, “Progressive Mandibular Retrusion— Idiopathic Condylar Resorption” which was published in the American Journal of Orthodontics in July and August of 1996.
Dr. Gottesman’s most recent publications in the November and December, 2014 issues of Dentistry Today, entitled, “TMD Rediscovered: A New Paradigm, Parts I and II” has set a new industry standard for understanding how temporomandibular joint disorders are linked to infections and hemostatic abnormalities.
The TMD E-Guide Questionnaire was assembled by Dr. Gottesman after 39 years of clinical experience and over a decade of active literary research. This all-inclusive form is an integral part of a complicated algorithm developed by Dr. Gottesman.
